Psalm 45

1 My thoughts are filled with beautiful words
for the king,
and I will use my voice
as a writer would use pen and ink.

2 No one is as handsome as you!
Your words are always kind.
That is why God will always bless you.
3 Mighty king, glorious ruler, strap on your sword
4 and ride out in splendour!
Win victories for truth and mercy and justice.
Do fearsome things with your powerful arm.
5 Send your sharp arrows through enemy hearts
and make all nations fall at your feet.

6 You are God, and you will rule forever as king.
Your royal power brings about justice.
7 You love justice and hate evil.
And so, your God chose you
and made you happier than any of your friends.
8 The sweet aroma of the spices myrrh, aloes, and cassia,
covers your royal robes.
You enjoy the music of harps
in palaces decorated with ivory.
9 Daughters of kings are here,
and your bride stands at your right side,
wearing a wedding gown trimmed with pure gold.

10 Bride of the king, listen carefully to me.
Forget your own people and your father’s family.
11 The king is your husband, so do what he desires.
12 All of the richest people from the city of Tyre
will try to influence you 13 with precious treasures.

Your bride, my king, has inward beauty,
and her wedding gown is woven with threads of gold.
14 Wearing the finest garments, she is brought to you,
followed by her young friends, the bridesmaids.
15 Everyone is excited,
as they follow you to the royal palace.

16 Your sons and your grandsons will also be kings
as your ancestors were.
You will make them the rulers everywhere on earth.

17 I will make your name famous from now on,
and you will be praised forever and ever.

Genesis 24

34 The servant explained:
I am Abraham’s servant. 35 The LORD has been good to my master and has made him very rich. He has given him many sheep, goats, cattle, camels, and donkeys, as well as a lot of silver and gold, and many slaves. 36 Sarah, my master’s wife, didn’t have any children until she was very old. Then she had a son, and my master has given him everything. 37 I solemnly promised my master that I would do what he said. And he told me, “Don’t choose a wife for my son from the women in this land of Canaan. 38 Instead, go back to the land where I was born and find a wife for my son from among my relatives.”

42 When I came to the well today, I silently prayed, “You, LORD, are the God my master Abraham worships, so please lead me to a wife for his son 43 while I am here at the well. When a young woman comes out to get water, I’ll ask her to give me a drink. 44 If she gives me a drink and offers to get some water for my camels, I’ll know she is the one you have chosen.”
45 Even before I had finished praying, Rebekah came by with a water jar on her shoulder. When she had filled the jar, I asked her for a drink. 46 She quickly lowered the jar from her shoulder and said, “Have a drink. Then I’ll get water for your camels.” So I drank, and after that she got some water for my camels. 47 I asked her who her father was, and she answered, “My father is Bethuel the son of Nahor and Milcah.” Right away I put the ring in her nose and the bracelets on her arms. 48 Then I bowed my head and gave thanks to the God my master Abraham worships. The LORD had led me straight to my master’s relatives, and I had found a wife for his son.
49 Now please tell me if you are willing to do the right thing for my master. Will you treat him fairly, or do I have to look for another young woman?

Romans 7

15 In fact, I don’t understand why I act the way I do. I don’t do what I know is right. I do the things I hate. 16 Although I don’t do what I know is right, I agree that the Law is good. 17 So I am not the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them.
18 I know that my selfish desires won’t let me do anything that is good. Even when I want to do right, I cannot. 19 Instead of doing what I know is right, I do wrong. 20 And so, if I don’t do what I know is right, I am no longer the one doing these evil things. The sin that lives in me is what does them.
21 The Law has shown me that something in me keeps me from doing what I know is right. 22 With my whole heart I agree with the Law of God. 23 But in every part of me I discover something fighting against my mind, and it makes me a prisoner of sin that controls everything I do. 24 What a miserable person I am. Who will rescue me from this body that is doomed to die? 25 Thank God! Jesus Christ will rescue me.

Matthew 11

16 You people are like children sitting in the market and shouting to each other,
17 “We played the flute, but you would not dance!
We sang a funeral song, but you would not mourn!”
18 John the Baptist did not go around eating and drinking, and you said, “That man has a demon in him!” 19 But the Son of Man goes around eating and drinking, and you say, “That man eats and drinks too much! He is even a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” Yet Wisdom is shown to be right by what it does.

25 At that moment Jesus said:
My Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I am grateful that you hid all this from wise and educated people and showed it to ordinary people. 26 Yes, Father, that is what pleased you.
27 My Father has given me everything, and he is the only one who knows the Son. The only one who truly knows the Father is the Son. But the Son wants to tell others about the Father, so that they can know him too.
28 If you are tired from carrying heavy burdens, come to me and I will give you rest. 29 Take the yoke I give you. Put it on your shoulders and learn from me. I am gentle and humble, and you will find rest. 30 This yoke is easy to bear, and this burden is light.
