Bible readings:

Psalm 40

5 You, LORD God, have done many wonderful things,
and you have planned marvellous things for us.
No one is like you!
I would never be able to tell all you have done.

6 Sacrifices and offerings are not what please you;
gifts and payment for sin are not what you demand.
But you made me willing to listen and obey.
7 And so, I said, “I am here to do what is written
about me in the book, where it says,
8 ‘I enjoy pleasing you. Your Law is in my heart.’ “

9 When your people worshipped, you know I told them,
“Our LORD always helps!”
10 When all your people met, I did not keep silent.
I said, “Our LORD is kind.
He is faithful and caring, and he saves us.”

Isaiah 7

10 Once again the LORD God spoke to King Ahaz. This time he said, 11 “Ask me for proof that my promise will come true. Ask for something to happen deep in the world of the dead or high in the heavens above.”
12 “No, LORD,” Ahaz answered. “I won’t test you!”
13Then I said:
Listen, every one of you in the royal family of David. You have already tried my patience. Now you are trying God’s patience by refusing to ask for proof. 14 But the LORD will still give you proof. A virgin is pregnant; she will have a son and will name him Immanuel.

Hebrews 10

3-4 But the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sins. It only reminds people of their sins from one year to the next.
5 When Christ came into the world, he said to God,

“Sacrifices and offerings are not what you want,
but you have given me my body.
6 No, you are not pleased with animal sacrifices
and offerings for sin.”

7 Then Christ said,

“And so, my God, I have come to do what you want,
as the Scriptures say.”

8 The Law teaches that offerings and sacrifices must be made because of sin. But why did Christ mention these things and say that God did not want them? 9 Well, it was to do away with offerings and sacrifices and to replace them. That is what he meant by saying to God, “I have come to do what you want.” 10 So we are made holy because Christ obeyed God and offered himself once for all.

Luke 1

26 One month later God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee 27 with a message for a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to Joseph from the family of King David. 28 The angel greeted Mary and said, “You are truly blessed! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was confused by the angel’s words and wondered what they meant. 30 Then the angel told Mary, “Don’t be afraid! God is pleased with you, 31 and you will have a son. His name will be Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of God Most High. The Lord God will make him king, as his ancestor David was. 33 He will rule the people of Israel forever, and his kingdom will never end.”
34 Mary asked the angel, “How can this happen? I am not married!”
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come down to you, and God’s power will come over you. So your child will be called the holy Son of God. 36 Your relative Elizabeth is also going to have a son, even though she is old. No one thought she could ever have a baby, but in three months she will have a son. 37 Nothing is impossible for God!”
38 Mary said, “I am the LORD’S servant! Let it happen as you have said.” And the angel left her.
