Sermon:
Bible readings:
Psalm 46
1 God is our mighty fortress,
always ready to help in times of trouble.
2 And so, we won’t be afraid!
Let the earth tremble
and the mountains tumble into the deepest sea.
3 Let the ocean roar and foam,
and its raging waves shake the mountains.
4 A river and its streams bring joy to the city,
which is the sacred home of God Most High.
5 God is in that city, and it won’t be shaken.
He will help it at dawn.
6 Nations rage! Kingdoms fall!
But at the voice of God the earth itself melts.
7 The LORD All-Powerful is with us.
The God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come! See the fearsome things
the LORD has done on earth.
9 God brings wars to an end all over the world.
He breaks the arrows, shatters the spears,
and burns the shields.
10 Our God says, “Calm down, and learn that I am God!
All nations on earth will honour me.”
11 The LORD All-Powerful is with us.
The God of Jacob is our fortress.

Jeremiah 31
31 The LORD said:
The time will surely come when I will make a new agreement with the people of Israel and Judah. 32 It will be different from the agreement I made with their ancestors when I led them out of Egypt. Although I was their God, they broke that agreement.
33 Here is the new agreement that I, the LORD, will make with the people of Israel:
“I will write my laws on their hearts and minds.
I will be their God, and they will be my people.
34 “No longer will they have to teach one another to obey me. I, the LORD, promise that all of them will obey me, ordinary people and rulers alike. I will forgive their sins and forget the evil things they have done.”

Romans 8
31 What can we say about all this? If God is on our side, can anyone be against us? 32 God did not keep back his own Son, but he gave him for us. If God did this, won’t he freely give us everything else? 33 If God says his chosen ones are acceptable to him, can anyone bring charges against them? 34 Or can anyone condemn them? No indeed! Christ died and was raised to life, and now he is at God’s right side, speaking to him for us. 35 Can anything separate us from the love of Christ? Can trouble, suffering, and hard times, or hunger and nakedness, or danger and death? 36 It is exactly as the Scriptures say,
“For you we face death all day long.
We are like sheep on their way to be butchered.”

John 8
31 Jesus told the people who had faith in him, “If you keep on obeying what I have said, you truly are my disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 They answered, “We are Abraham’s children! We have never been anyone’s slaves. How can you say we will be set free?”
34 Jesus replied:
I tell you for certain that anyone who sins is a slave of sin! 35 And slaves don’t stay in the family forever, though the Son will always remain in the family. 36 If the Son gives you freedom, you are free!
