Psalm 22
1 My God, my God, why have you deserted me?
Why are you so far away?
Won’t you listen to my groans and come to my rescue?
2 I cry out day and night, but you don’t answer,
and I can never rest.
3 Yet you are the holy God, ruling from your throne
and praised by Israel.
4 Our ancestors trusted you,
and you rescued them.
5 When they cried out for help, you saved them,
and you did not let them down
when they depended on you.
6 But I am merely a worm, far less than human,
and I am hated and rejected by people everywhere.
7 Everyone who sees me makes fun and sneers.
They shake their heads, 8 and say,
“Trust the LORD! If you are his favourite,
let him protect you and keep you safe.”
9 You, LORD, brought me safely through birth,
and you protected me
when I was a baby at my mother’s breast.
10 From the day I was born, I have been in your care,
and from the time of my birth,
you have been my God.
11 Don’t stay far off
when I am in trouble with no one to help me.
12 Enemies are all around like a herd of wild bulls.
Powerful bulls from Bashan are everywhere.
13 My enemies are like lions
roaring and attacking with jaws open wide.
14 I have no more strength than a few drops of water.
All my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like melted wax.
15 My strength has dried up like a broken clay pot,
and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.
You, God, have left me to die in the dirt.
Job 23
1 Job said:
2 Today I complain bitterly, because God has been cruel
and made me suffer.
3 If I knew where to find God,
I would go there 4 and argue my case.
5 Then I would discover what he wanted to say.
6 Would he overwhelm me with his greatness?
No! He would listen 7 because I am innocent,
and he would say, “I now set you free!”
8 I cannot find God anywhere in front or back of me,
9 to my left or my right.
God is always at work, though I never see him.
Hebrews 4
12 What God has said isn’t only alive and active! It is sharper than any double-edged sword. His word can cut through our spirits and souls and through our joints and marrow, until it discovers the desires and thoughts of our hearts. 13 Nothing is hidden from God! He sees through everything, and we will have to tell him the truth.
14 We have a great high priest, who has gone into heaven, and he is Jesus the Son of God. That is why we must hold on to what we have said about him. 15 Jesus understands every weakness of ours, because he was tempted in every way that we are. But he did not sin! 16 So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved kindness, and we will find help.
Mark 10
17 As Jesus was walking down a road, a man ran up to him. He knelt down, and asked, “Good teacher, what can I do to have eternal life?”
18 Jesus replied, “Why do you call me good? Only God is good. 19 You know the commandments. ‘Do not murder. Be faithful in marriage. Do not steal. Do not tell lies about others. Do not cheat. Respect your father and mother.’ “
20 The man answered, “Teacher, I have obeyed all these commandments since I was a young man.”
21 Jesus looked closely at the man. He liked him and said, “There’s one thing you still need to do. Go sell everything you own. Give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come with me.”
22 When the man heard Jesus say this, he went away gloomy and sad because he was very rich.
23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “It’s hard for rich people to get into God’s kingdom!” 24 The disciples were shocked to hear this. So Jesus told them again, “It’s terribly hard to get into God’s kingdom! 25 In fact, it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into God’s kingdom.”
26 Jesus’ disciples were even more amazed. They asked each other, “How can anyone ever be saved?”
27 Jesus looked at them and said, “There are some things that people cannot do, but God can do anything.”
28 Peter replied, “Remember, we left everything to be your followers!”
29 Jesus told him:
You can be sure that anyone who gives up home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or land for me and for the good news 30 will be rewarded. In this world they will be given a hundred times as many houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and pieces of land, though they will also be mistreated. And in the world to come, they will have eternal life. 31 But many who are now first will be last, and many who are now last will be first.
Psalm 6
1 Don’t punish me, LORD, or even correct me
when you are angry!
2 Have pity on me and heal my feeble body.
My bones tremble with fear,
3 and I am in deep distress.
How long will it be?
4 Turn and come to my rescue.
Show your wonderful love and save me, LORD.
5 If I die, I cannot praise you or even remember you.
6 My groaning has worn me out.
At night my bed and pillow are soaked with tears.
7 Sorrow has made my eyes dim, and my sight has failed
because of my enemies.
8 You, LORD, heard my crying,
and those hateful people had better leave me alone.
9 You have answered my prayer and my plea for mercy.
10 My enemies will be ashamed and terrified,
as they quickly run away in complete disgrace.
Psalm 42
1 As a deer gets thirsty for streams of water,
I truly am thirsty for you, my God.
2 In my heart, I am thirsty for you, the living God.
When will I see your face?
3 Day and night my tears are my only food,
as everyone keeps asking, “Where is your God?”
4 Sorrow floods my heart, when I remember
leading the worshippers to your house.
I can still hear them shout their joyful praises.
5 Why am I discouraged? Why am I restless?
I trust you! And I will praise you again
because you help me, 6 and you are my God.
I am deeply discouraged as I think about you
from where the Jordan begins at Mount Hermon
and from Mount Mizar.
7 Your vicious waves have swept over me
like an angry ocean or a roaring waterfall.
8 Every day, you are kind,
and at night you give me a song
as my prayer to you, the living LORD God.
9 You are my mighty rock. Why have you forgotten me?
Why must enemies mistreat me and make me sad?
10 Even my bones are in pain,
while all day long my enemies sneer and ask,
“Where is your God?”
11 Why am I discouraged? Why am I restless?
I trust you! And I will praise you again
because you help me, and you are my God.
Psalm 43
1 Show that I am right, God!
Defend me against everyone who doesn’t know you;
rescue me from each of those deceitful liars.
2 I run to you for protection.
Why have you turned me away?
Why must enemies mistreat me and make me sad?
3 Send your light and your truth to guide me.
Let them lead me to your house
on your sacred mountain.
4 Then I will worship at your altar
because you make me joyful.
You are my God, and I will praise you.
Yes, I will praise you as I play my harp.
5 Why am I discouraged? Why am I restless?
I trust you! And I will praise you again
because you help me, and you are my God.
Luke 7
11 Soon Jesus and his disciples were on their way to the town of Nain, and a big crowd was going along with them. 12 As they came near the gate of the town, they saw people carrying out the body of a widow’s only son. Many people from the town were walking along with her.
13 When the Lord saw the woman, he felt sorry for her and said, “Don’t cry!”
14 Jesus went over and touched the stretcher on which the people were carrying the dead boy. They stopped, and Jesus said, “Young man, get up!” 15 The boy sat up and began to speak. Jesus then gave him back to his mother.
16 Everyone was frightened and praised God. They said, “A great prophet is here with us! God has come to his people.”
17 News about Jesus spread all over Judea and everywhere else in that part of the country.
