Bible readings:

Psalm 26

1 Show that I am right, LORD!
I stay true to myself,
and I have trusted you without doubting.
2 Test my thoughts and find out what I am like.
3 I never forget your kindness,
and I am always faithful to you.
4 I don’t spend my time with worthless liars
5 or go with evil crowds.

6 I wash my hands, LORD, to show my innocence,
and I worship at your altar,
7 while gratefully singing about your wonders.
8 I love the temple where you live,
and where your glory shines.
9 Don’t sweep me away, as you do sinners.
Don’t punish me with death as you do those people
who are brutal 10 or full of meanness
or who bribe others.
11 I stay true to myself. Be kind and rescue me.

12 Now I stand on solid ground!
And when your people meet, I will praise you, LORD.

Job 1 and 2

1 Many years ago, a man named Job lived in the land of Uz. He was a truly good person, who respected God and refused to do evil.

1 When the angels gathered around the LORD again, Satan was there with them, 2 and the LORD asked, “Satan, where have you been?”
Satan replied, “I have been going all over the earth.”
3 Then the LORD asked, “What do you think of my servant Job? No one on earth is like him – he is a truly good person, who respects me and refuses to do evil. And he hasn’t changed, even though you persuaded me to destroy him for no reason.”
4 Satan answered, “There’s no pain like your own. People will do anything to stay alive. 5 Try striking Job’s own body with pain, and he will curse you to your face.”
6 “All right!” the LORD replied. “Make Job suffer as much as you want, but just don’t kill him.” 7 Satan left and caused painful sores to break out all over Job’s body – from head to toe.
8 Then Job sat on the ash-heap to show his sorrow. And while he was scraping his sores with a broken piece of pottery, 9 his wife asked, “Why do you still trust God? Why don’t you curse him and die?”
10 Job replied, “Don’t talk like a fool! If we accept blessings from God, we must accept trouble as well.” In all that happened, Job never once said anything against God.

Hebrews 1

1 Long ago in many ways and at many times God’s prophets spoke his message to our ancestors. 2 But now at last, God sent his Son to bring his message to us. God created the universe by his Son, and everything will someday belong to the Son. 3 God’s Son has all the brightness of God’s own glory and is like him in every way. By his own mighty word, he holds the universe together.
After the Son had washed away our sins, he sat down at the right side of the glorious God in heaven. 4 He had become much greater than the angels, and the name he was given is far greater than any of theirs.

Mark 10

2 Some Pharisees wanted to test Jesus. So they came up to him and asked if it was right for a man to divorce his wife. 3 Jesus asked them, “What does the Law of Moses say about that?”
4 They answered, “Moses allows a man to write out divorce papers and send his wife away.”
5 Jesus replied, “Moses gave you this law because you are so heartless. 6 But in the beginning God made a man and a woman. 7 That’s why a man leaves his father and mother and gets married. 8 He becomes like one person with his wife. Then they are no longer two people, but one. 9 And no one should separate a couple that God has joined together.”
10 When Jesus and his disciples were back in the house, they asked him about what he had said. 11 He told them, “A man who divorces his wife and marries someone else is unfaithful to his wife. 12 A woman who divorces her husband and marries again is also unfaithful.”

13 Some people brought their children to Jesus so that he could bless them by placing his hands on them. But his disciples told the people to stop bothering him.
14 When Jesus saw this, he became angry and said, “Let the children come to me! Don’t try to stop them. People who are like these little children belong to the kingdom of God. 15 I promise you that you cannot get into God’s kingdom, unless you accept it the way a child does.” 16 Then Jesus took the children in his arms and blessed them by placing his hands on them.

Psalms 119 and 26

[Psalm 119]
103 Your teachings are sweeter than honey.
104 They give me understanding and make me hate all lies.
105 Your word is a lamp that gives light wherever I walk.

[Psalm 26]
12 Now I stand on solid ground!
And when your people meet, I will praise you, LORD.

Matthew 7

24 Anyone who hears and obeys these teachings of mine is like a wise person who built a house on solid rock. 25 Rain poured down, rivers flooded, and winds beat against that house. But it did not fall, because it was built on solid rock.
26 Anyone who hears my teachings and doesn’t obey them is like a foolish person who built a house on sand. 27 The rain poured down, the rivers flooded, and the winds blew and beat against that house. Finally, it fell with a crash.

Luke 24

25 Then Jesus asked the two disciples, “Why can’t you understand? How can you be so slow to believe all that the prophets said? 26 Didn’t you know that the Messiah would have to suffer before he was given his glory?” 27 Jesus then explained everything written about himself in the Scriptures, beginning with the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets.

Acts 17

10 That same night the LORD’S followers sent Paul and Silas on to Berea, and after they arrived, they went to the Jewish meeting place. 11 The people in Berea were much nicer than those in Thessalonica, and they gladly accepted the message. Day after day they studied the Scriptures to see if these things were true. 12 Many of them put their faith in the Lord, including some important Greek women and several men.

John 1

43-44 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. There he met Philip, who was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. Jesus said to Philip, “Come with me.”
45 Philip then found Nathanael and said, “We have found the one that Moses and the Prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.”
46 Nathanael asked, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
Philip answered, “Come and see.”

John 12

20 Some Greeks had gone to Jerusalem to worship during Passover. 21 Philip from Bethsaida in Galilee was there too. So they went to him and said, “Sir, we would like to meet Jesus.” 22 Philip told Andrew. Then the two of them went to Jesus and told him.

John 14

8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father. That is all we need.”
9 Jesus replied:
Philip, I have been with you for a long time. Don’t you know who I am? If you have seen me, you have seen the Father. How can you ask me to show you the Father?

Acts 8

34 The official said to Philip, “Tell me, was the prophet talking about himself or about someone else?” 35 So Philip began at this place in the Scriptures and explained the good news about Jesus.

Isaiah 53

1 Has anyone believed us or seen the mighty power
of the LORD in action?
2 Like a young plant or a root that sprouts in dry ground,
the servant grew up obeying the LORD.
He wasn’t some handsome king.
Nothing about the way he looked made him attractive to us.
3 He was hated and rejected;
his life was filled with sorrow and terrible suffering.
No one wanted to look at him. We despised him and said,
“He is a nobody!”

4 He suffered and endured great pain for us,
but we thought his suffering was punishment from God.
5 He was wounded and crushed because of our sins;
by taking our punishment, he made us completely well.
6 All of us were like sheep that had wandered off.
We had each gone our own way,
but the LORD gave him the punishment we deserved.

7 He was painfully abused, but he did not complain.
He was silent like a lamb being led to the butcher,
as quiet as a sheep having its wool cut off.

8 He was condemned to death without a fair trial.
Who could have imagined what would happen to him?
His life was taken away because of the sinful things
my people had done.
9 He wasn’t dishonest or violent,
but he was buried in a tomb of cruel and rich people.

10 The LORD decided his servant would suffer as a sacrifice
to take away the sin and guilt of others.
Now the servant will live to see his own descendants.
He did everything the LORD had planned.

11 By suffering, the servant will learn the true meaning
of obeying the LORD.
Although he is innocent, he will take the punishment
for the sins of others,
so that many of them will no longer be guilty.
12 The LORD will reward him with honour and power
for sacrificing his life.
Others thought he was a sinner,
but he suffered for our sins
and asked God to forgive us.
