Psalm 106
1 We will celebrate and praise you, LORD!
You are good to us, and your love never fails.
2 No one can praise you enough
for all of the mighty things you have done.
3 You bless those people who are honest and fair
in everything they do.
4 Remember me, LORD, when you show kindness

5 Let me prosper with the rest of your chosen ones,
as they celebrate with pride because they belong to you.
6 We and our ancestors have sinned terribly.
19 At Horeb your people made and worshipped
20 the statue of a bull, instead of you, their glorious God.
21 You worked powerful miracles to save them from Egypt,
but they forgot about you
22 and the fearsome things you did at the Red Sea.
23 You were angry and started to destroy them,
but Moses, your chosen leader, begged you not to do it.
Exodus 32
1 After the people saw that Moses had been on the mountain for a long time, they went to Aaron and said, “Make us an image of a god who will lead and protect us. Moses brought us out of Egypt, but nobody knows what has happened to him.”
2 Aaron told them, “Bring me the gold earrings that your wives and sons and daughters are wearing.” 3 Everybody took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron, 4 then he melted them and made an idol in the shape of a young bull.
All the people said to one another, “This is the god who brought us out of Egypt!”
5 When Aaron saw what was happening, he built an altar in front of the idol and said, “Tomorrow we will celebrate in honour of the LORD.” 6 The people got up early the next morning and killed some animals to be used for sacrifices and others to be eaten. Then everyone ate and drank so much that they began to carry on like wild people.
7 The LORD said to Moses:
Hurry back down! Those people you led out of Egypt are acting like fools. 8 They have already stopped obeying me and have made themselves an idol in the shape of a young bull. They have bowed down to it, offered sacrifices, and said that it is the god who brought them out of Egypt. 9 Moses, I have seen how stubborn these people are, 10 and I’m angry enough to destroy them, so don’t try to stop me. But I will make your descendants into a great nation.
11 Moses tried to get the LORD God to change his mind:
Our LORD, you used your mighty power to bring these people out of Egypt. Now don’t become angry and destroy them. 12 If you do, the Egyptians will say that you brought your people out here into the mountains just to get rid of them. Please don’t be angry with your people. Don’t destroy them!
13 Remember the solemn promise you made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You promised that someday they would have as many descendants as there are stars in the sky and that you would give them land.
14 So even though the LORD had threatened to destroy the people, he changed his mind and let them live.
1 Thessalonians 4
1 Finally, my dear friends, since you belong to the Lord Jesus, we beg and urge you to live as we taught you. Then you will please God. You are already living that way, but try even harder. 2 Remember the instructions we gave you as followers of the Lord Jesus. 3 God wants you to be holy, so don’t be immoral in matters of sex. 4 Respect and honour your wife. 5 Don’t be a slave of your desires or live like people who don’t know God. 6 You must not cheat any of the LORD’S followers in matters of sex. Remember, we warned you that he punishes everyone who does such things. 7 God didn’t choose you to be filthy, but to be pure. 8 So if you don’t obey these rules, you are not really disobeying us. You are disobeying God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.
9 We don’t have to write you about the need to love each other. God has taught you to do this,
Matthew 22
1 Once again Jesus used stories to teach the people:
2 The kingdom of heaven is like what happened when a king gave a wedding banquet for his son. 3 The king sent some servants to tell the invited guests to come to the banquet, but the guests refused. 4 He sent other servants to say to the guests, “The banquet is ready! My cattle and prize calves have all been prepared. Everything is ready. Come to the banquet!”
5 But the guests did not pay any attention. Some of them left for their farms, and some went to their places of business. 6 Others grabbed the servants, then beat them up and killed them.
7 This made the king so furious that he sent an army to kill those murderers and burn down their city. 8 Then he said to the servants, “It is time for the wedding banquet, and the invited guests don’t deserve to come. 9 Go out to the street corners and tell everyone you meet to come to the banquet.” 10 They went out on the streets and brought in everyone they could find, good and bad alike. And the banquet room was filled with guests.
11 When the king went in to meet the guests, he found that one of them wasn’t wearing the right kind of clothes for the wedding. 12 The king asked, “Friend, why didn’t you wear proper clothes for the wedding?” But the guest had no excuse. 13 So the king gave orders for that person to be tied hand and foot and to be thrown outside into the dark. That’s where people will cry and grit their teeth in pain. 14 Many are invited, but only a few are chosen.

Theme: TURNING OUR BACKS ON GOD’S VISITATIONS
Today’s theme which is taken from the Scriptures Psalm 106, Exodus 32:1-14, 1Thessalonians 4:1-9, Matthew 22:1-14 is that very important subject which indicates how those who already are children of God avoid paying due attention to the things that MUST NEVER EVER BE DONE! It is a dangerous practice that is not acceptable before Holy God and for which He punishes. It is the usual scenario of a people who are merely aware of God yet do not concern themselves with knowing that very God. It is also the story of a people who point fingers at those who went before them since the transgressions of these are already recorded, forgetting that their own transgression are before the Holy God.
Psalm 106 lists all the transgressions of Israel that are recorded in the Book of Exodus making mention of Israel’s near mutiny at the Red Sea, craving for past foods, being envious of Moses and Aaron, the exchanging of God’s Glory for an image of a bull at Mount Horeb, the despising of the pleasant land and the promise of God after the spies’ report and many others. These are things that were done by a people who had been REDEEMED FROM BONDAGE by God who used powerful miracles to achieve that, promising them that He would be their God and that they would be His people.
Today the Word of God is ringing out to us ‘But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.’ We casually read such Bible verses and move on and sorry I will not give you the book and chapter for you to have a free ride………. Go look for it and start studying the Word of God.
In Zimbabwe in 2008 food vanished from supermarket shelves in all urban centres but we did not hear of, or see mass deaths and starvation. If you need any better evidence than this, that you are a royal priesthood, then may God the Father forgive you or punish you whichever He chooses to do! 2008 passed and you have completely forgotten how God upheld you with His right hand. At the slightest inconvenience we shout at the top of our voices mourning over how God has forgotten us. Who says God has forgotten us? Is this any sign that God has abandoned us at all? No, look at the bigger picture, it is only us who are turning our backs on God’s visitations. Let us count our blessings and name them one by one.. God is working wonders amongst us. Only this week a friend asked among a group of friends ‘How are we expected to go for a week without tap water? This Council of Bulawayo is horrible.’ But it has been raining for more than a week so why not harvest that rain and store the water for day to day use, or is it tape water only that we need?
Exodus 32 is the record of Israel turning its back on God, simply because Moses had been called to go and receive the written Law of God which the Voice of God had pronounced to Israel as recorded at Exodus 20. That Voice had said ‘You shall not make yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below’ Exodus 20:4, but they proceeded to make a golden calf their god. Can there be a better turning of backs from God’s visitations than this? Do we worship our leaders or do we worship because our leaders are around supervising us? Should Revd. Phiri not feel safe to go on his annual leave? Should the Presiding Bishop fear to travel for an international conference in case he returns to total chaos? Should preachers feel uneasy when visiting their children in faraway places for fear of what will happen in their absence? Children of God must always remember that their God is the same yesterday, today and forever and that His love endures forever Ps.106. Tired of enslavement, Israel cried to God and He heard their cry and came to redeem them in person. How can such people forget so easily to the point of feeling abandoned by that very God? Why did they not cry to that very God to relieve them of the anxiety they were feeling in the absence of Moses? I am sure He would have heard their cry and granted them relief! Instead they chose to replace that God! It is human to respond like Israel did, we also can fall into the same trap unless we remain focussed on His work among us.
The Apostle Paul challenges the Thessalonians on how to live a life that please God. He says, ‘It is God’s will that you should be sanctified, that you should avoid sexual immorality, that each of you should learn to control his own body….For God did not call us to be impure but to live a holy life.” You were called to a holy life, you were not called to be the slanderer of your neighbour, you were not called to be the destroyer of other believers lives, but you were called to lead an exemplary life as a Child of God so that others out there can see that you belong to God. You are God’s moving temple.
Matthew 22:1-14 clearly tells us that the invitation to become part of the family of God, the invitation to enter the kingdom of God, and the invitation to be part of His Wedding Banquet was sent out to you and I. It is up to us to accept the invitation, GET OURSELVES READY, and go to the banquet. No one is forced to attend and some who do not get themselves ready and prepared can get to the banquet hall, but their stay there will be very short lived. This brings me back to my friend who complained about the lack of tap water following Council failure to provide same for reasons beyond their control. God has given us so much rain during the same period so why are we not thanking God for His graciousness as we get busy with the task of harvesting that water for use in our homes. If He, in His opportune time gives to us and we fail to use the privilege, if we are asked to attend a wedding and go dressed as dairy farm hands at His opportune time His wrath will meet us and we will be led away to be destroyed no matter how hard we shout we did not know any better.
Let us harness the rain water that the Almighty God, Jehovah Jireh is giving us! He is indeed our Provider, even when we have reached the end of our tether, that is when He becomes more powerful.
May The Holy Spirit help us to be obedient, trust God and to fight the good fight. Brothers and sisters, boys and girls, I implore you to Come to The Lord, the invitation is still open. Come. Let us turn away from our sinfulness and serve the one and only living God, and look forward to the coming of His son from heaven – Jesus, whom God raised from the dead, the author and perfecter of our faith. He is the one who has rescued us from the terrors of the coming judgement.
He is The Way, The Truth and The Life.
And now may The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and fellowship of The Holy Spirit be with us all, now and forever more…AMEN
